Rich is an accomplished Healthcare Strategy & Management Consultant who combines deep business development, financial and operations acumen to guide diverse organizations to continuous, profitable growth. His current work focuses on ambulatory care development for health systems reflecting his market strategy, planning/implementation, service line evolution, population health implementation and M&A affiliation/partnering initiatives. His client base includes both under-performing health systems and market leaders from coast-to-coast, in both rural and urban settings. Since launching Miller Consulting in 1998, Rich has completed 50+ short and long-term engagements for clients in 28 states and the UAE. Rich has also recently joined the 3rd Curve Consulting Group.

Rich’s dual professional background—he began his career in consumer-focused regional public health planning and eventually became a strategy and service line development specialist for major national healthcare corporations. His planning foundation makes him uniquely qualified to position enterprises for success in today’s uncertain healthcare environment. His expertise spans the full range of the strategy and management consultant function—from strategy audits and M&A assessments, provider group affiliations, to ambulatory centers including ASCs, chronic disease centers, and free-standing ambulatory networks.  Rich’s work also includes operational turnarounds, service line integration with Accountable Care Organizations, Population Health Management models, and rationalization studies for the rapidly evolving post-acute continuum of care and related capital/facility planning.

His most recent projects include ambulatory market and financial feasibility assessments in North Carolina, ambulatory rationalization/prioritization plans in Missouri and Illinois; formulating a consolidation plan for new orthopedic and neuroscience center in Texas; delivering an affiliation assessment for New Hampshire health systems; and completing a community health needs a study for Long Island. Rich also has a special interest in research and community intervention models, working with a regional planning team in South Carolina for early childhood epigenetic, toxic risk conditions.

Prior to opening his consulting practice, Rich held executive strategy roles in faith-based, community-sponsored and investor-owned organizations. He served as Vice President of Strategic Planning at Columbia/HCA; Vice President of  Planning and Marketing for Bon Secours-St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, and Associate Corporate Director of Business and Strategy for American Medical International (now Tenet). His most recent national contracting includes Huron Consulting, Alvarez Marsal, and FTI.

Rich holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Michigan State University and a Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan. Rich’s professional memberships include the Hospital Financial Management Association, MGMA and the Society for Health Strategy and Management Association.
